Veluwe and Arnhem
The province of Gelderland is located in the middle of the Netherlands and is characterized by beautiful landscapes of forest, heathland and nice villages.
The region around Apeldoorn is called the Veluwe. The surroundings of Uddel and the beautifully situated village of Hoog Soeren are certainly nice to visit.
Further south, between Arnhem and Apeldoorn you'll find the Hoge Veluwe National Park. This is the largest national park in the Netherlands and has a beautiful nature of forests, heaths and sandy plains. The park houses the Kröller Müller Museum, with a large collection of paintings of van Gogh and famous impressionists (Renoir, Monet and Manet) and a sculpture garden (Rodin and Moore).
South of the Hoge Veluwe and close to the border with Germany is Arnhem, a city from which you can explore the region. Definitely worth a visit is the open-air museum, a large park where you can experience Holland from centuries ago.
The bridge over the Rhine near Arnhem is internationally known for a fierce battle in the Second World War ( The movie: "A Bridge too Far”). From the Airborne museum you have a beautiful view over the famous bridge.

around Apeldoorn
Wonderful walking and cycling through this varied landscape of heather (at its best in August and September), sand drifts and forest. Deer and wild boar also have a large habitat here.
At Uddel you’ll find the Kootwijker Zand, the largest active sand drift in Western Europe. 10 km from Uddel is Kootwijk. In these surroundings you still can see many people in traditional clothing.
Hoog Soeren: 5 km west of Apeldoorn and situated on a hill lies the picturesque village of Hoog Soeren amidst the forests of the Koninklijke Houtvesterij, an estate that belonged to the Royal Palace het Loo. If you walk there you might come across a deer, wild boar, badger or fox.

Deventer
The Hanseatic city of Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and lies along the IJssel river. On the main square of the old city centre, the Brink, lies the Waag, the oldest weighing house in the Netherlands. The imposant St. Lebuinus church has a tower with panoramic views of Deventer and the IJssel River.
Other attractions include the Toy Museum, with the largest toy collection of the country and The Bolwerks Mill, an old sawmill and now a museum. In the beautiful Deventer Cake Shop, also a tearoom, you can try the local delicacy. 1 hour and 10 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station.

Zutphen

Or imagine yourself centuries back in the atmospheric coffee and tea shop De Pelikaan (Pelikaanstraat 9). And the old Dutch candy store Het Snoepje (Ravenstraatje 3) is also fantastic.
National Park The Hoge Veluwe
The largest national park in the Netherlands, De Hoge Veluwe, is located between Arnhem, Ede and Apeldoorn. A varied nature of different types of forests, wet and dry heaths, grassy plains and drifting sand landscapes. Animals you can spot include the red deer, the wild boar, mouflon and roe deer. There are many cycling routes and hiking trails. The entrances to the Park are located in Hoenderloo, Otterlo and Schaarsbergen. More info...
Kröller-Müller Museum
This impressive museum is located in the middle of the National Park The Hoge Veluwe and houses the second largest van Gogh collection in the world. Well-known paintings include the Sower, Café Terrace at Night and the Potato Eaters. You can also admire other famous painters here: Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. There is a lot of modern art and the sculpture garden of the museum is world famous. There are works by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and Jean Dubuffet. Hoenderloo and Otterlo
Otterloo and Hoenderloo are villages with good accommodation and restaurants and are close to the entrance to the Hoge Veluwe National Park and to the Kröller-Müller Museum. If you spend the night in Hoenderloo or Otterloo you can relax, cycle and walk through nature, view the Kröller-Müller Museum and get up early in the morning to spot deer.

Arnhem
South of the Hoge Veluwe and close to the border with Germany is the city of Arnhem.
A nice place to stay and explore the area. Plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in the city center. Arnhem is known for its fashion industry and every year in June the Netherlands largest fashion and design festival is held here. In the fashion shopping area you can buy the latest clothing from the designers themselves.
With a guide you can walk through the historic cellars underneath Arnhem and from the Eusebius church you have a beautiful view of the city.

A large open air adventure and museum park (lots of interactive activities) where you can experience how The Netherlands looked like centuries ago. Arnhem and the Second World War
At the end of the Second World War, Arnhem was bombed and the bridges over the Rhine were destroyed. Tens of thousands of soldiers were killed.
Operation Market Garden: A Bridge to Far
In September 1944 the Canadian and British Allies, led by the British General Bernard Montgomery, tried to conquer a number of important bridges in North Brabant and Gelderland from the Germans, so that the Allies could advance into Germany: Operation Market Garden. But the bridge over the Rhine in Arnhem could not be taken, the Germans were stronger than expected. This led to the Battle of Arnhem. Eventually the Allies withdrew and the city of Arnhem was bombed. Almost 100,000 people had to leave the city and ten thousands soldiers died.
The War movie "A Bridge Too Far" from 1977 is about this battle.
In the Airborne Museum (Rijnkade 150 Arnhem) you can learn everything about the war and Arnhem. The museum is near the river where you have a good view of the famous bridge.
Vrijheids (Freedom) Museum Groesbeek
Groesbeek is a village south of Arnhem and Nijmegen and is beautifully situated amidst the hilly countryside near Germany. Here is the Freedom Museum, a museum about war and freedom in the past but also about the importance of freedom in the present. The museum is built in a 12 meter high dome that looks like a parachute.
Groesbeek also has a large Canadian war cemetery. ( Zevenheuvelenweg 38, Groesbeek).
